Discover Ballandean & the Granite Belt Wine Region
Located in the heart of Queensland’s renowned Granite Belt, Ballandean is the ultimate destination for wine lovers, nature seekers, and food enthusiasts alike. Just south of Stanthorpe, this picturesque village is the gateway to one of Australia’s highest and most unique wine-growing regions.
A Wine Lover’s Paradise
The Granite Belt is home to over 50 wineries and cellar doors, many of which are family-owned and operated. With a cool climate, high altitude, and granite-rich soils, the region produces premium-quality wines — from classic varieties like Shiraz, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to “Strange Bird” alternative varietals such as Alvarinhno and Gros Manseng as well as Tempranillo, Verdelho, and Saperavi.
Ballandean itself is surrounded by some of the region’s most acclaimed wineries, all within a short, scenic drive. Visitors can enjoy intimate tastings, vineyard tours, and gourmet food and wine pairings, all served with warm country hospitality.
More Than Just Wine
While the wines are a major drawcard, the Granite Belt offers so much more. The region is known for its fresh local produce, including apples, berries, stone fruit, olives, artisan cheeses, and handmade preserves. Farm gate stalls, orchards, and boutique food outlets dot the landscape, offering a true paddock-to-plate experience.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Nature lovers will be captivated by the area’s stunning national parks.
Girraween National Park is famous for its dramatic granite formations, wildflower displays, and hiking trails that lead to breathtaking views.
Sundown National Park offers rugged, remote wilderness ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, and exploring off the beaten path.
Events, Markets & Country Charm
The Granite Belt also boasts a vibrant events calendar. From seasonal food and wine festivals to country markets, art shows, and music events, there’s always something happening. Notable highlights include Grazing the Granite Belt, Apple & Grape Harvest Festival, Snowflakes in Stanthorpe, and the Stanthorpe Berry Festival
Whether you're here for a romantic weekend, a wine-tasting adventure, or a relaxing nature escape, Ballandean and the Granite Belt offer a unique and unforgettable Queensland experience.
our ESTATE
Welcome to Sancerre Estate — a boutique vineyard and accommodation retreat located in the heart of Queensland’s stunning Granite Belt wine region.
Our story begins in the late 1980s, when Peter and Anne Smith first established the property as Smiths Vineyard. They planted the first vines and later opened a charming Bed & Breakfast in 1993, followed by the cozy Shiraz Cottage in 1997. Their vision brought together country hospitality and a love for fine wine, creating a peaceful escape for guests visiting the Stanthorpe region.
In 2013, Peter and Anne passed the torch to us — Brad and Stacey Allan. For years, we had dreamed of running our own winery or boutique accommodation business. In 2012, we travelled across Europe in search of ideas and inspiration. One of the most memorable stops was the hilltop village of Sancerre in France, renowned for its wine and old-world charm. A visit to a local winery there, thanks to a friend of a family friend, left such an impression on us that we named our new venture Sancerre Estate.
Today, we proudly continue the tradition of offering warm, personalized hospitality, award-winning accommodation, and a serene vineyard experience. Whether you're here for a romantic getaway, wine tasting, or to explore the beauty of the Granite Belt, we look forward to welcoming you to Sancerre Estate.
We can't wait to see you.
